Business Environmental Survey

Business Environmental Survey

Youth could develop an appropriate survey to be mailed or distributed to area businesses regarding their environmental and humanitarian business practices.   You might be pleasantly surprised in finding many companies are now becoming much more environmentally conscious. The survey would "wake up" those companies who are not currently making an effort to meet their responsibilities in environmental and humanitarian justice. Youth groups could then be prepared with a program to help the companies develop a company environmental group with a designated leader to set up meetings with agendas, publish updates in their newsletters and suggestions for getting "green," awards and incentives, have a fun "naming" contest for the group (although their Marketing Dept would probably prefer to pick the group name as they could incorporate it into their advertising); but the fun part could be a contest for the various awards (Global Goodies, E-Candy, Lean and Green, Big Greenie Award - ???, or names related to their products or services).

Here are some ideas for environmental survey questions for starters:

1. Does your organization promote and/or incorporate environmental awareness / conservation within your organization on a continual basis?
(If Yes, please describe)

2. What measures have been taken towards environmental awareness/conservation: (check all that apply)

____ articles in the organization's newsletter

____ encourage carpooling and alternative transportation

____ on-site recycling of paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass

____ waste reduction program

____ purchase of energy efficient office products

____ energy efficient lighting and heating

____ purchase of 100% renewable energy for the workplace

____ purchase of recycled paper and office products

____ purchase of solar electricity (photovoltaics)

____ use of environmentally-friendly packaging

____ top-to-bottom environmental impact review of operating
procedures, production, use and disposal of all materials

____ other (please describe)

3. Do you recognize or offer incentives for environmentally conscious suggestions and actions within your organization? (If Yes, please describe)

4. Does your organization sponsor any environmental events or activities during the year?

5. Some companies are saving millions of dollars from the energy efficient and environmentally-friendly improvements that they have put in place.  Would your organization be interested in exploring ways to incorporate environmentally conservative methods in the workplace?
(Yes, No, Not at this time-please check back)

6.  Would your company be interested in obtaining information on how to build environmental ethics into their standard operating procedures?

7. Please list your organization's contact person regarding environmental matters:

Name________ Phone________ Email________  Website________

Company Vehicles
One area where you could really help with toxic emissions and cleaning up our atmosphere would be in contacting companies, organizations, and governmental agencies that own fleets of vehicles which are used in conducting their business. Talk about whether they have considered changing from gasoline powered vehicles to electric vehicles.

Partner with Local Environmental Group - Seek Assistance from Employees
Local environmental groups would probably be most happy to help develop a really good survey.  We suggest not making the survey too long, because the business staff person contacted might feel too busy at work to deal with it. Great if you can send it to companies via employees who could follow up to make sure it got completed by the appropriate person(s).  The main thing is to reach the businesses that do not incorporate environmental protection into their activities, and offer some valid and beneficial assistance to them in getting a program underway.

Be Prepared to Take a Leadership Role to Help Guide Businesses
When working with (economy-driven) businesses, it helps to remember that, although most individuals within the business world truly care about the environment, they are too busy at work to do something about it, or they don't know where to start or what to do.  This is where you can shine!  You can be prepared with a program to offer them education, direction, and leads to ideas, products and services to assist them.  Uppermost in the minds of the decision-makers for companies is that word "MONEY."  So, the best way to approach it is through helping them realize there is potential for great savings within their total organization (therefore more profits for the company). And they can feel like heroes for the planet!

Provide Educational Resources
Information regarding company savings can be found on the Web.  Incorporate some of these types of statistics into your material to show businesses the advantages of getting "green."
Be prepared to answer the question, "What is meant by getting green?"
Refer companies to online information.  See Resources for Green Businesses .
