STORES CAN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT
IMPACT ON RECYCLING AND REDUCING THE GROWING AMOUNT OF TRASH
Many manufacturers are beginning to pay more attention to
providing packaging that is recyclable, made from recycled materials, and
packaging that is not oversized for the purposes of display and advertising
which then cause even more of a burden on our environment and natural resources.
Stores sell the products that come in packaging material and they need to
consider the environment regarding the products they carry. Stores can move
some mountains (of trash) by encouraging and demanding proper packaging of
products, and they need to promote products that come in recyclable packaging.
Some supermarkets have been environmentally conscious in providing containers
for local recycling of telephone books when new directories come out, in
collection of used plastic bags, and in recycling of cardboard boxes the
products arrive in. It would be very helpful to consumers if the
stores posted information pertaining to recycling, and had informational
handouts available to give to their customers. And it is also up to us, as
consumers, to choose products that have as little impact on the environment as
possible.

OREGON GOVERNOR CALLS ON STATE'S AGENCIES TO PRESERVE RESOURCES AND BECOME SUSTAINABLE
Use less, reuse and recycle - and "Don't show up for a meeting with your coffee in a paper cup. Save a tree: Use a mug."
Attendees at sustainability conference in Portland were given six months to develop guidelines to assure the state uses recycled
materials in buildings and roads, nontoxic paints and safer chemicals, and to find solutions in every aspect of their operations
